Conexus Indiana and the Ports of Indiana, along with the Indiana Department of Transportation and Indiana Economic Development Corporation, have convened an Indiana Logistics Council to get industry input on the challenges facing the state’s transportation, distribution and logistics companies.
The Council addresses infrastructure priorities, public policy and other issues supporting our common vision of making Indiana the crossroads of the global supply chain.
Today’s manufacturing workers need greater technical expertise than in the past, along with improved ‘soft skills’ – the critical thinking and communication skills needed to navigate 21st century factories. In manufacturing today, employees are more likely to work in front of a computer monitor or troubleshoot advanced robotic systems than stand on an assembly line for 8-hour shifts.
Conexus Indiana, the state’s advanced manufacturing and logistics initiative, is tackling this challenge by working with our institutions of higher education and vocational training providers to create programs that meet the needs of today’s manufacturers. Conexus recently collaborated with Ivy Tech Community College on a comprehensive transformation of its advanced manufacturing curriculum – learn more here:
Dream It Do It
Today’s manufacturing jobs demand more education and greater technical skills than ever before. A recent survey by the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) shows that 80% of manufacturing companies list employee recruitment as a major concern, and demand is just as strong in logistics and global supply chains grow more and more complex.
The problem? Too many young people have outdated or ill-founded perceptions of these industries, and don’t understand the many high-tech, high-paying jobs available in manufacturing and logistics. Conexus Indiana, working with regional partners across the state, is launching a grassroots outreach and marketing plan based on the National Association of Manufacturing’s success “Dream It, Do It” program to attract more potential employees into the workforce pipeline.
