AV Freight Readiness Assessement
How Indiana can lead in automated freight transportation
Four years after the Indiana Economic Development Corporation launched thConexus Indiana, in partnership with the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) and global infrastructure firm AECOM, commissioned the AV Freight Readiness Assessment to understand how automated vehicle (AV) freight technologies are evolving — and how Indiana can prepare to lead.
Indiana’s logistics industry is vital to the U.S. economy, and automation is quickly moving from concept to reality. This study outlines how Indiana can capitalize on its existing strengths, make strategic infrastructure investments, and stay competitive in the rapidly changing world of freight.
Key Findings
- Indiana is well positioned to lead — but must act quickly. Indiana’s central location, extensive highway system, and strong logistics sector offer a competitive advantage, but early movers will capture the biggest benefits.
- Interstate corridors are the top opportunity. AV freight is expected to launch along long-haul highway routes. Indiana interstates including I-70, I-65 and I-74 are prime candidates for deployment.
- Infrastructure needs are targeted and achievable. Strategic upgrades like enhanced lane markings, signage, and digital infrastructure can prepare key corridors for AV freight while improving safety for all drivers.
- Collaboration will drive success. Partnerships among INDOT, freight carriers, AV developers, and manufacturers will ensure infrastructure plans meet real-world logistics needs.
- The economic potential is significant. Early adoption of AV freight will attract tech companies, improve supply chain efficiency, and drive job growth in emerging sectors.
